The Starship is powered by SpaceX’s next-generation Raptor engines. These engines use a combination of liquid methane and liquid oxygen as propellant, providing double the thrust compared to the Falcon 9 Merlin engine.
Starship will be powered by six engines: three Raptor engines, and three Raptor Vacuum (RVac) engines, which are Raptor engines modified for use in the vacuum of space.
3. Lunar and Martian Missions
One of the most exciting aspects of the Starship is its potential to enable human missions to the Moon and Mars. SpaceX has already announced plans to send a Japanese billionaire and a group of artists around the Moon in the Starship as early as 2023.
